Coach Bio

Coach – Carlo Buffone

I am very excited to be coaching this year’s U14 Leitrim Hawks Rep B team. For
those who don’t know me, I played youth hockey at the competitive level and
continue to stay connected to the game as a player in one of the city’s many adult
leagues. I played both defense and forward, which I believe gives me a well-
rounded understanding of the game of hockey. As for my hockey coaching
experience, I started coaching hockey as a non-parent prior to having kids and have
been a head coach, assistant coach, and on-ice helper from IP through to U13 at the
house and competitive levels. My goals for this season include creating a positive
environment where the players are excited to work hard and improve their hockey
skills, develop a strong sense of team, and have fun.

Coaching Philosophy:

In general, I will follow Hockey Canada’s development pathway for this age group.
We will continue to teach the core technical skills of skating, puck control, passing,
and shooting. Skill mastery allows players to improve, develop, and compete at the
current Rep B level and beyond. Development will also include team tactics, team
play, and an introduction to systems. With U14 being the first year of body contact,
we will emphasize heads-up hockey and prioritize safety, including the safety of
our opponents; players. Players will be asked to respect their teammates,
opponents, and officials. Working with and leveraging the talent and skills of the
other volunteer coaches is essential to achieving the development goals of
individual players and the team. Although players are settling into specific
positions, I welcome and encourage players to play different positions.

The principles of my coaching philosophy include:

1. Creating a positive and fun sports environment. Nurture and foster the love
for the game of hockey.
2. Every player is valued, regardless of skill level or role on the team.
3. Set clear and demanding expectations. Competitive hockey requires focus
and commitment.
4. Open, honest, and clear communication with players, parents, and all
stakeholders.
5. Care about the players and work hard to understand each of them.6. Build confidence and self-esteem in the players. Players need to know they
are supported and that mistakes are opportunities to get better.
7. Encourage self-discipline and responsibility. Control only the things you can
control. Play within your abilities and be yourself.

Looking forward to a great 2023-24 season.
