Head Coach – Martin De La Fuente

Bio

I grew up playing Rep B hockey in my youth here in Ottawa. I was fortunate to play for a few
associations and I’ve enjoyed the game since I was 5 years old. Hockey was always part of our
household with 2 older siblings playing high level hockey until their junior years. Our family, despite being
from a country where ice hockey was virtually unknown, grew obsessed with the game and now that
passion has continued to new generations in our family.
I started being involved with LMHA as a Convenor and a team manager. I soon after became involved
with LMHA as a coach 4 years ago and have been fortunate to be an assistant coach, goalie coach and
head coach with Rep B and spring teams at U10, U11 and U12 I’ve also coached at house league in IP,
U9, U11, U13 and U15 teams at various levels (A, B and C). This experience at different levels has
exposed me to a wealth of knowledge for coaching players various stages in their hockey paths. It has
also given me the opportunity to learn from a deep pool of coaches, to further enhance my skills and
knowledge as a hockey coach.

Hockey Philosophy

My focus has always been on teaching and developing the fundamentals of hockey at any age. I believe
all kids can be coached and grow better than they are today in all aspects of hockey and life. My
philosophy includes teaching the WHY behind drills and techniques, so kids can translate what they’ve
learned to games easier. This becomes extremely important for kids to gain confidence when learning
new skills and developing hockey IQ as they get older. I have a calm but focused approach in my
coaching, and ensure I make decisions as a coach based on the best interests of the players and the
team as a whole. My focus season over season has been about growth and not necessarily the final
score. Wins and losses drive competition, but I strongly believe you and your team learn and grow from
losses as much as from wins. I believe communication with parents and players alike is the key to a good
season. I live by 4 rules on the ice:
1. Work Hard. You can’t grow as a player or person if you don’t come to practice or a game ready
to put in the work.
2. Listen to the coaches and each other as teammates
3. Respect everyone in hockey and life (Parents, Teachers, coaches, teammates, referees, other
teams)
4. Have Fun! Hockey, no matter what level you play, should be fun. That’s what keeps us loving
the game and coming back as many seasons as possible, and to hopefully coach one day!
